Different approaches have been developed at LEMMA in order to deal with the optimal synthesis of pencil beams using both excitations and locations as degrees of freedom of the problem [1]-[3]. The underlying ideas include the capability of taking advantage of the convexity of the problem with respect to array excitations while performing a global optimization just on the elements’ locations (with the inherent advantages in terms of solutions optimality and computational burden).
